Exploring Wells County’s Historical Celebrations

The Spring 2026 Senior Snippets topics included: The 1876 Centennial Celebration, the construction story of the courthouse, agriculture and farmsteads, automobile dealerships of early Bluffton and the 1976 Bi-Centennial Celebration.

Here is a page from a newspaper promoting America’s Centennial Celebration in 1876.

Jim Sturgeon, President of the Wells County Historical Society shared newspaper accounts of the construction of the Wells County Courthouse, 1889-91. The building was completed and dedicated in 1891.

Larry and Elaine McAfee were presenters of the session on agriculture and farmsteads of Wells County. Each shared information about items they have collected, many things from family, while living in their 150 year old two story home in Rockcreek Township.

Ben Jones a member of the Wells County Historical Society Board of Directors shared information and photos about the early automobile dealerships that were in Bluffton.

Jim Sturgeon shared information and newspaper accounts about the 1976 Bi-Centennial Celebration. This is the logo that was used to help promote the event across the country.
