“Casey at the Bat” is a mock herioc poem by Ernest Thayer, published in 1888. The poem centers around the fictional Mudville Nine, who are losing a baseball game with the final batter being the star player, Casey. Despite the team’s hopes being placed on him, Casey strikes out, resulting in a loss and a humorous downfall of the supposed hero.
