Honors to Famous Iris Gardeners

Pictured are Jerry Oswalt and descendants of E.B. Williamson, who organized the Wabash River Park when it was originally built back in 2008, with the new monument (in the center). From left to right is Oswalt, David Wilkins Jr., Tammy Cromie-Wilkins, and Sarah Stikeleather. Tammy and David are great-grandchildren of the Williamson’s and Sarah is a great-great-grandchild. Jerry began working as a young boy for Mary Williamson and became life-long friends.

The official dedication of the monument was held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at Wabash Park which is the site of the iris garden which includes several varieties that were developed by Longfield Farm. Comments were made by Bluffton Mayor John Wicker and Bluffton Parks Department Superintendent, Bandy Fiechter.

The Mayor issued a official proclamation in honor of the Williamson’s and Cook.

A crowd gathered for the event that included officials from the historical museum, local garden enthusiasts along with family and friends.

Here is the new monument in memory to “E.B.” and Mary Williamson who started the Longfield Iris Farm, located at the west edge of Bluffton, in 1918. Paul Cook Later joined as a partner in hybridizing irises.

Alan Dougherty, who conducted extensive research on E.B. and Mary Williamson, spoke about the history of irises in Wells County. Learn more about the history in his book, “Edward Bruce Williamson – a Bluffton History” which is available for a $35 donation to Loving Shepherd Ministries. The book is available at the Wells County Historical Museum in Bluffton.

Special thank you to Allen Daugherty for the photos.
