You may have noticed this sign on the replica of a covered bridge on the River Greenway east of Bluffton. Most covered bridges had a sign that said something like “Walk Your Horses While on this Bridge.” This comes from horse-drawn wagons crossing the bridges. Slow walking minimizes the stress and structural damage from the pounding of horses’ hooves. Learn more about “Bridges of Wells County” from County Historian, Jim Sturgeon at the Wells County Historical Society’s Spring Meeting and Dinner on Monday, April 22, 5:30pm at the Wells County Public Library, Bluffton. Meal reservations due April 15. Check out the details here.

There will also be a limited number of the 2023 book release, “Wells County Schools 1837 – 2022,” for sale that evening.
