Thank you to Larry McAfee and Jim Sturgeon for the interesting program about the “History of Farm Tractors and Equipment” that was presented at the Wells County Historical Museum Annex. They showed part of the video, “The Great Tractor Show” and pointed out with models and some of the unique engineering features that were developed through the years.

The One for All “Farmall” by International Harvester celebrating 100 years in 2023.

Jim Sturgeon explaining the three-point hitch on tractors and what it did for farmers. Harry Ferguson patented the three-point linkage in Britain in 1926. After years of talking with Henry Ford about the new development, Ford partnered with Ferguson to introduce the first three-point hitch in the United States on the Ford-Ferguson 9N tractor in 1939.

Learning about live PTO (Power Take Off) which allowed the driver to push the clutch in and the PTO would keep running. The first tractor to have it was in 1945, Cockshutt Farm Equipment Ltd of Brantford, Ontario, Canada, introduced the Cockshutt Model 30 tractor with live PTO. Live PTOs eventually became a widespread norm for new equipment; in modern tractors, live PTO is often controlled by push-button or selector switch.
